Padel bag: what to pack, and do you need a racket bag?

Updated 9 October 2026

You don't need a special bag to start padel. You do need to stop leaving your racket in the car. Here is what is worth carrying, and when a proper padel bag starts to make sense.

The packing list

  • Racket, with a fresh overgrip.
  • Two spare overgrips. In humid weather they can go slippery within a single long session.
  • A can of balls, in case the club runs out or the balls are dead.
  • Padel shoes, carried separately if you want to keep sand out of the rest of your bag.
  • Water bottle. More than you think on an outdoor court.
  • Small towel and a spare shirt.
  • Cap for outdoor courts.
  • Wristband, if sweat runs into your hand.
  • A spare pair of sports socks.

Backpack or racket bag?

Padel backpack
Fits one or two rackets, often in a separate compartment, plus clothes and shoes. Enough for most social players, and easier on a scooter or in the metro.
Racket bag (thermobag)
A long bag with room for two or more rackets, a shoe compartment and usually a thermal lining in the racket section. Worth it if you carry more than one racket, play tournaments or leave your gear in a car or office during the day.

Why heat matters for your racket

The core of a padel racket is foam or EVA, and the face is held together with resin. Heat softens them. A car parked in the sun during an Indian summer gets much hotter than any court, and that is not what a racket is built for. A thermal compartment slows the heat down; it does not make a car boot safe for hours. The best option is still to take the racket inside with you.

Monsoon

A damp bag smells within days. Take your shoes and clothes out after every session, let the bag dry open, and don't zip a wet towel in with your racket. Shoes dry best with crumpled newspaper inside, away from direct heat.

Small accessories worth having

Frame protector tape for the top of the racket, if you scrape it along the floor or the glass a lot. A pressure ball tube or ball pump is optional; fresh balls are simpler.
